Why Students Choose Australia as a Study Abroad Destination

It's highly likely that Australia will come up whenever you ask someone about their higher studies. There are definitely a lot of people interested in this island country. What are the reasons behind the high demand for studying abroad in Australia? Here are a few of the most compelling ones:

  1. The standard of education offered is, of course, crucial in making a final decision on where to enroll. Throughout history, universities in Australia have been a breeding ground for innovative thinkers and doers. 5 Australian universities make it to the top 50 in the QS World University Rankings in 2023. These prestigious institutions are among the best in the world when it comes to teaching and research.
  2. Australia's diversity is one of the things that draws foreign students to the country. 6 Australian cities rank in the top 40 of the QS Best Student Cities 2023. Among the reasons contributing to these are the cities’ student mix, where Melbourne is leading the race! You'll fit right in with the many languages, cultures, nationalities, and ethnic groups that make up the world's smallest continent.
  3. Post-graduation opportunities are another plus of studying in Australia. The country ranks high on the list of nations that welcome international students with open arms. If you are eligible for a Subclass 485 visa after graduation, you can extend your time in Australia from two to four years upon graduation. This lets you seek and take advantage of work opportunities and work towards permanent residency to call Australia your forever home!

Applying to Australian Universities

Holding an Australian university degree says a lot about how qualified you are as a graduate. To take advantage of this, you need to understand the Australian way of higher education. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) conceptualizes the different levels of higher education in the country. It offers a system that makes it easy to translate international academic qualifications to their Australian equivalence.

Before enrolling, you also need to verify that your selected degree is recognised by CRICOS (the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students). We’ll discuss both in a bit more detail below.

What is AQF?

Australian education and training are governed by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), a national policy. It combines the credentials from every area of education and training into a solitary comprehensive and balanced qualifications framework.

The AQF has ten levels in total:

  • Levels 1-7 - undergraduate studies (diplomas, certifications, and three-year Bachelor’s degrees)
  • Level 8 - four-year Bachelor’s degrees
  • Level 9 - Master’s degrees
  • Level 10 - Postdoctoral degrees

What is CRICOS?

The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) was established by the Education Services for Overseas Students Act of 2000. It keeps a list of the schools and programs that have state and territorial approval to instruct international students.

So, naturally, as an international student your course needs to be CRICOS-registered to receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)! And heads up - you need the CoE to apply for your student visa, or the Subclass 500.
